When God Chose You He Named You! (Bible Study Lesson)

1. As a Son and Daughter of God of our Heavenly Father has called you to a new name. We tend to flock to people who are close in kin, from the same family tree, bloodline, or background of where we can from. God has called you to a new family (Galatians 3:28). The name that he gives us is Jesus Christ of Nazareth. (Genesis 17:5) No longer shall your name be called whoremonger, adulterer, fornicator, gambler, liar, thief, and etc.

2. A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1

a. A good name is better than money, riches, and anything that money could ever buy.

3. Name/Onoma- Authority, Reputation, and character

4. God has given us Authority- God has called you to be a Son of God to be subject under his authority and has given us authority (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1; 2 Timothy 1:7; 1 Corinthians 4:20; Genesis 1:26)

a. Has your authority changed? Are you fearful of saying no to darkness?

b. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. (Luke 10:19)

5. Naming someone means you have authority over them.

a. Jesus has authority over us, he doesn’t force us to serve him. We willfully serve him because we understand he gave us life and named us. Which means he has authority over us.

b. Before you are born you already have a reputation to live up to according to the person who named you. (Ephesians 1:4)

6. God has given us a new Reputation- (1 Thessalonians 4:7; 1 Peter 1:14-16)

a. Has your reputation changed?

b. When someone claims you as their son or daughter you are supposed to represent them everywhere you go. (1 peter 1:14-16)

c. God has put his reputation on your life. You carry God’s reputation

d. God has called you to everything that he is (holy, pure, light, righteous), and that is the reputation we must uphold.

-“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:5

7. God has given us Character- (Galatians 5:22-23; 2 Timothy 1:7)

a. Has your character changed?

8. GOD GIVES YOU A FUTURE DESTINATION WHEN HE NAMES YOU

9. Names that God changed in scripture

a. Abram meaning “Exalted Father” to Abraham meaning “Father of Multitude” *Genesis 17:5

b. Sarai meaning “princess” to Sarah “queen of princes” Genesis 17:15

c. Jacob meaning “heel holder” to Israel “God prevails” Genesis 32:28

d. Simon Bar Jonah mean “son of Jonah” to Cephas/Peter meaning “A stone” John 1:42; Matthew 16:18

10. GOD STAMPS HIS COVENANT ON YOU WHEN HE NAMES YOU Genesis 17:1-5

· God’s words will not come back to him void but it will accomplish the very thing in which he has sent it to do.

· Romans 9:6-9 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

· Romans 9:25-26…Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’” 26 “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

11. Everything that God does, he does it for his name sake, like wise everything we do, we should do for his name sake. Isaiah 48:9-11

- Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
