Hebrews 7 Bible Study (06/04/2020)

Overview: In Hebrews 6 we see what great wonderful blessings that God has set us up with even the blessings of Abraham. Even the blessings of the Kingdom of God and being filled with righteousness. God has set us up for divine greatness and there is no one that can do anything about it. God is going to bless us with the Kingdom of God and has blessed us with His Holy Spirit.

1. Transitioning we begin to see the working of this order even from the beginning with Melchizedek blessing Abraham. Now according to Hebrews 6:19 it says that Jesus has become a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 6:19)

What does it mean that Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek?

Who was Melchizedek? (Genesis 14:18-20; Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 7:1-4)

A. King of Salem ancient Jerusalem

B. Priest of God in the days of Abraham

C. Met Abraham returning from his military victory

D. Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils

E. King of Righteousness

F. King of Peace

G. Had no genealogy (No beginning of days and no end of days)

H. Considered to be a type of Christ in the days of Abraham, so that Christ could be made a priest after his order

I. Ordinary Man

J. Greater than Abraham

Was Jesus Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18-20?

The answer is “NO”!

Jesus is FAR GREATER THAN Melchizedek

1. He is the Messiah meaning the Anointed One

2. He is the Son of God

3. He is the Word

4. The creator of the world

5. The Lamb of God and the list goes on

For it says that He was made after the order of Melchizedek. So what are the similarities here?- Hebrews 7:15

1. Both were are Priest of God Most High

2. Both are considered to be Priest forever (no one knows when Melchizedek died or his parents) Hebrews 7:15-17

3. Both are/were King of Salem meaning King of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)

4. Both are/were King of Righteousness meaning Jesus forever and Melchizedek no longer is King of Righteousness (Isaiah 9:6-7)

5. Bless Abraham

6. Greater than Abraham

2. War of Kings

a. In Genesis 14, a war of Kings (who were actually giants) broke out and the giants took Abrahams nephew Lot.

3. Abrams act of Worship (Genesis 14:20)

a. Abram gave tithe as a form of Worship not act of law

b. It was customary among ancient nations to give a tenth of the spoils of war to the objects of their worship.

c. Melchizedek blessed Abraham

i. “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

d. And he gave him a tithe of all (the spoil)

i. IF IT WASN’T FOR GOD MOST HIGH I WOULD NOT HAVE SPOIL

e. Tithing is a form of worship not law keeping (Malachi 3:10)

4. The sons of Levi received the priesthood by law (Exodus 13:1-2; Numbers 8:14-20; Hebrews 7:5)

a. When the Israelites left Egypt God separated firstborn of the womb to be Holy to Him and to do the work of the tabernacle. (Exodus 13:1-2)

b. Next God gave a command that He is going to separate the Levites instead of the firstborn. (Numbers 8:14-16)

c. Being a priest meant that your life is completely devoted unto God and His services. To serve in the tabernacle.

d. When the children of Israel would cross over the Jordan to possess the promise land all of the tribes of Israel would receive their portion of land and goods from the land.

e. The Levites were the only tribe to not receive a portion of land and goods

f. Therefore the Levites received tithes from the rest of the tribes on their spoils of what they gained in the land of Canaan because they did not get any portion of land like their fellow brothers.

g. The Levites did not work the land they did the work of the tabernacle. They were completely consecrated and devoted to God.

h. The Israelites could not draw near to the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, anything dealing with sacraments unless they would be killed

5. Levi is a Son of Abraham (Genealogy) Hebrews 7:9-10

a. Abraham begat Issac

b. Issac begat Jacob/Israel (Israelites) and Esau

c. Israel (Had 12 sons called 12 tribes of Israel) begat Levi

6. What was the law of tithes?

a. God made (under law) that as a form of worship the children of Israel had to pay tithes to the Levites.

b. Unfortunately, the Israelites were corrupt far beyond any type of worship towards God which results in God even saying that they are robbing God. – Malachi 3:10

c. Tithes was never meant to be used as a cursing/blessing but always as a form of worship

7. We are not paying tithes to Abraham but to our type of Melchizedek (Jesus Christ)

a. By faith our father is Abraham who paid tithes to his type of Christ before the law of the Moses

8. Hebrews 7:11-17

9. In Psalm 110:4 hundreds of years after the law of Moses God showed David that there is still standing an necessity for a greater priest who would have a priesthood after Melchizedek NOT Aaron or the Levites but a priesthood after the order of Melchizedek.

a. The priest would have to be someone who is not a priest only because of him being a son of Levi according to the law of Moses but still anointed by God – Hebrews 5:4

b. Jesus was from the tribe of Judah

c. Jesus is a priesthood after the order of Melchizedek

d. Jesus was made Hight Priest not because He was born into the right family (Levites) but because of an endless life. (According to the order of Melchizedek verse 17)

10. Now we have a much GREATER HOPE – Verse 19

a. We get to draw near to God and partake not only in His presence but also in His divine nature.

11. We have a BETTER COVENANT- Verse 22

a. We are TRULY forgiven, and our sins are truly blotted out

12. Priest in the old testament would serve a few years and die so every couple years there would be a new High Priest

a. Our High Priest resurrected from the dead and is our Priest forever and not ever changing again

.

13. Our High Priest according to Verse 25-28

a. Able to save to the uttermost those who come to God

b. Always makes intercession for us

c. Fitting for us

d. Holy

e. Harmless

f. Undefiled

g. Separated from sinners

h. Become higher than the heavens

i. No need for atonement for His own sins

j. Appointed in by an oath.

Dear Heaven Father,

Thank you for revelation knowledge. Thank you for sending a better hope, a better covenant, a better Priest. Thank you that you have taken every sin on the cross but even more for the resurrection. Now that Jesus has resurrected now I have the joy and the strength to know that my High Priest is not dead but He is alive making intercession for my everyday life in heavenly places. Lord I love you for these things. In Jesus Name. Amen!

We get to go behind the veil where the forerunner

Hebrews 6:20

Jesus is our forerunner

Forerunner means that Jesus went before us into the heavens and our High Priest to represent us until we are safe in heaven with God. Metaphorically speaking God is judge is Jesus is our Lawyer. Because of Jesus we get to go into the very presence of God behind the veil where Jesus has already went before us. Our

God is judge
